Procedure

The Partnership Fund serves as the authorized coordinator for all in-kind contributions to the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology:

  • The Partnership Fund Office requests a letter from the DONOR stating a desire to donate the property to the Partnership Fund, and that they are not expecting anything in return.

In the letter, the DONOR describes/inventories the property being offered for donation and any recipient designation they require. The DONOR may list a dollar value if they choose to do so.
  • The TJHSST department or laboratory that will be maintaining the property will issue a statement in writing of:
    • Recommendation to accept or decline the gift,
    • Explain how the gift will be used and its benefit to TJHSST, and
    • Confirm that the gift will be maintained and inventoried by the department in accordance with Fairfax County Public Schools system policy.
  • The department/division manager or laboratory director will coordinate the receipt of the property with the Partnership Fund Office.
  • The Partnership Fund Office will issue a donor acknowledgement and receipt. The Partnership Fund will only issue a receipt of a dollar amount if the gift is accompanied by an appraisal or sales invoice (on smaller items).

If these documents are not available, the receipt will state that the Partnership Fund Office will send an IRS Non-Cash Charitable Contributions Form 8283 for the donor to complete and have signed. Once returned to the Partnership Fund Office it will be sent to the appropriate persons for signature and then be returned to the donor for tax purposes.
  • As stated in the Partnership Fund Gift Policy, only the Partnership Fund Office can acknowledge and issue receipts for gifts to the TJHSST Partnership Fund.

In-Kind Donors may contact the Partnership Fund to discuss gift intentions at: JeffersonPartnershipFund@tjhsst.edu or telephone 703.750.8316

Donate Stock

Many alumni, parents and friends of Thomas Jefferson are enhancing their charitable giving by directly donating specific shares of appreciated securities to the Jefferson Partnership Fund. Whether your portfolio performance is above market averages or even if you had a decline in your portfolio value, a stock donation is a wise and effective investment in educational excellence at Thomas Jefferson.

Why donate stocks and other marketable securities?

Normally, when a donor sells appreciated securities and donates the proceeds, he or she might be subject to tax on the gains and as a result, have less left to contribute. However, when you donate securities to the Jefferson Partnership Fund, as a tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization we don't pay capital gains tax on the sale of securities.

Moreover, as the donor you will be entitled to an income tax deduction for the full current market value of your gift, to the extent allowed by law. We recommend that you consult with your financial planner, accountant or estate attorney to discuss your specific situation.

It is easy, safe and cost effective to transfer securities electronically into the Jefferson Partnership Fund’s account. Here are the simple steps:

  1. Please notify our Jefferson Partnership Fund office in advance of stock transfers so that we can instruct our broker to accept delivery of your gift and acknowledge it properly for income tax purposes.
