Annual Development Goals

In a competitive world, TJ must maintain its excellence if our students are to succeed in the future. Rapidly changing technologies outpace the flow of state and county funds.

That takes giving.

The Fund gratefully accepts and manages contributions of cash, grants, and in-kind gifts from corporations, foundations, alumni, and parents for distribution to TJ programs by the principal.

Please see TJ's Needs List.

Great Expectations

From the very beginning, 20 years ago, TJ has been a story about Great Expectations. The "Founding Fathers" whose vision created the school had great expectations it would prepare kids for the emerging Era of Technology. The School Board and the County had "great expectations" that the school would put Fairfax County on the science and technology map, and draw great teachers and kids from all over Northern Virginia. Employers had "great expectations" that the kids, once graduated, would contribute to the local emergence of the high-tech industry.

Twenty-one years later, those "great expectations" are, if anything greater than ever. Our kids today now face an new "Era of Competition," for college slots, for jobs, for growth and advancement. Our nation faces tremendous challenges in science and technology from other nations.

The Jefferson Partnership Fund Delivers
on these Great Expectations!

Research grants
Lab equipment
Faculty continuing education
Mentorships, Internships

Donor Recognition

Guiding Principle

Recognition of donors is essential to the success of the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology Partnership Fund. Effective and appropriate recognition establishes the foundation for continuing a mutually satisfying relationship between the donor and the Partnership Fund.

Annual Fund

Jefferson Partnership Fund Honors will reflect cumulative annual fund giving within the fiscal year. The list of all Annual Fund donors will be created on parchment and mounted on the Jefferson Partnership Wall located in the lobby of the main entrance to the school. This same list will be included in the Partnership Fund’s Annual Report published and mailed to all donors.

The donor list development is the responsibility of the Executive Director in consultation with the officers of the board and the chairman prior to printing for additions or deletions, giving particular attention to those donors who may wish to remain anonymous.

Matching gifts, gifts of securities, designated gifts, restricted gifts, memorials and gifts-in-kind will all be included in determining donor recognition levels.

Alumni donors will be identified by the year of their graduation shown in parenthesis after their names. Both current and alumni parents are identified with their student’s name shown in parentheses. Faculty and staff members employed at Jefferson within the past fiscal year are identified with two asterisks **. The names shown will be shown as they appear in our donor records or as requested by the donor. Anonymity will be honored upon request.

The TJHSST Partnership Fund respects the privacy of its donors. Our donor lists are never sold, rented, traded, released or published other than on this Annual Fund donor wall and in our Annual Report.

Placed in the lobby of the Main Entrance to the school, the Jefferson Wall of Honor lists donors’ cumulative gifts and pledges received since the inception of the TJHSST Partnership Fund in 1999.

The list development will be the responsibility of the Executive Director in consultation with the board and the chairman for additions or deletions, giving particular attention to those donors who may wish to remain anonymous.

The name of each major donor will be engraved on an individual plate and permanently inducted onto the Jefferson during a formal donor recognition reception. The Legacy Society recognizes individuals who have included the TJHSST Partnership Fund in their estate plans through a bequest, charitable trust or annuity, life insurance policy or other planned gift.

Governance

  • The Partnership Fund is governed by an all volunteer board of directors. The board consists of its chairman, secretary and treasurer, four ex-officio members: principal, Immediate Past Board Chairman, TJHSST Alumni Association representative, PTSA president, and eighteen members representing alumni, current and alumni parents, and the local business community. Members of the board are elected at the Fund's annual meeting in June and serve in two staggered two-year terms. Ex-officio members' terms of service coincide with the terms of their respective offices.
  • The Partnership Fund welcomes all donations, both restricted and unrestricted, that will benefit TJHSST. The Partnership Fund also encourages and accepts gift-in-kind donations directed to TJHSST. Gift acceptance policies have been established to manage donations of equipment, technology and other non-cash donations.
  • The Fund manages its assets in a conservative and accountable manner. It abides by clear, documented procedures governing its operation. The Board of Directors conducts an annual detailed review of financial records, and an external audit is prepared for compliance with general accounting procedures.
  • The Board is committed to effective stewardship of donors' gifts to the Partnership Fund. A formally adopted Financial Management Plan provides for the security and viability of the funds donated, and is available to all donors and prospective donors. Organizational assets are held in a combination of short-term money market accounts and long-term marketable securities, at the discretion of the Board of Directors. Income earned from these investments is allocated to the appropriate funds to best fulfill donor intentions. Policies, procedures and all financial statements are available upon request.
